Declaration on Nature in AONBs

The Colchester Declaration pledges that we will:

  • support more opportunities for people to connect with nature,
  • prepare a Nature Recovery Plan for the AONB,
  • embed an ecosystems services approach into our plans,
  • work with our partners towards Net Zero carbon emissions by 2030,
  • ensure favourable condition of more wildlife habitats and create new woodland.

By working together, sharing experiences, best practice and knowledge, AONBs collectively work towards:

  • Conserving and enhancing the natural and cultural heritage of the UK’s Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, ensuring they can meet the challenges of the future.
  • Supporting the economic and social wellbeing of local communities in ways which contribute to the conservation and enhancement of natural beauty.
  • Promoting public understanding and enjoyment of the nature and culture of Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and encourage people to take action for their conservation.
  • Value, sustain, and promote the benefits that the UK’s Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty provide for society, including clean air and water, food, carbon storage and other services vital to the nation’s health and wellbeing.
