Cycling
Whether it's cycling along quiet country lanes or mountain biking in forests, you'll find it all in the Shropshire Hills.
Six Castles Cycleway (58 mile linear route)
This cycle route between Shrewsbury and Leominster is also known as Route 44 and forms part of the National Cycle Network and National Byway. Challenging in places, it meanders along quiet roads between England and Wales and connects with the trains at Shrewsbury, Craven Arms and Ludlow. It features six very different castles, from the romantic ruins of Bishop's Castle and Richard's Castle to the substantial stone buildings of Shrewsbury, Ludlow and Croft Castles and the elegance of Stokesay Castle.
Town Cycle Rides (8 to 35 mile circular routes)
Check out the range of circular rides starting from Ludlow, Church Stretton, Bishop's Castle, Cleobury Mortimer or Craven Arms. Each town leaflet includes route maps, instructions and points of interest. Detailed leaflets are available for all these cycle rides from local Visitor Information Centres or visit www.shropshirecycling.co.uk
Woodland and Forest Mountain Bike Routes
Hopton Wood, Mortimer Forest, Eastridge Woods and Bury Ditches are all owned by the Forestry Commission and include a series of cycle trails along the forest tracks, which vary in length and difficulty. Hopton Wood includes family trails and a competition route for experienced mountain bikers. For more information visit www.forestry.gov.uk/marches.
There's also easy mountain biking on Wenlock Edge if you follow the Jack Mytton Way (bridleway) signs along the disused railway between Much Wenlock and Roman Bank.
