Riverside Alders

Piccture of riverside alders

Grant aid and advice is available to help landowners return river woodlands to productive use. For hundreds of years rivers such as the Corve and Clun were coppiced to provide alder for clogs, gunpowder and charcoal. The result was the creation of wildlife rich habitats as the coppice cycle moved along their riverbanks.

Today, these industries have declined and coppicing has largely ceased. Bringing back coppicing will increase the wildlife in our rivers and provide income for landowners through the sale of alder timber.
