A rich cultural heritage has evolved with this landscape. Situated on the border of England and Wales, the Shropshire Hills has seen centuries of human strife. The legacy of these struggles is etched into the landscape in the Iron Age hillforts that crown many hilltops and the great border earthwork of Offa’s Dyke.
The area has the greatest concentration of medieval castle earthworks anywhere in Britain. Clun Castle is an excellent example. Stokesay Castle, near Craven Arms, is the finest and best preserved 13th-century fortified manor house in England.
