Caering for Caradoc – Fix the Fort Appeal

Banner

We need to raise £10,000 to fix Caer Caradoc’s worn-down ramparts

Caer Caradoc stands in the heart of the Shropshire Hills and is very popular with visitors from near and far. This iconic landmark gets its name from its link to the legendary warrior prince Caradoc, who rebelled against the Romans in the first century AD. Decades of wear has left its mark on the ramparts of this popular view point. With your help, Shropshire Hills AONB Trust will work to Fix the Fort so it can enjoyed by generations to come.

Our Aim

The aim of the project  is to improve access whilst protecting the archaeology from further damage. Over time, erosion has caused a deep v-shaped notch and long erosion scar in the southern edge of the main rampart. English Heritage are working up a specification for works to repair the scar whilst maintaining access to the fort. The v-shaped notch will be repaired to allow easier access whilst hardening the path against further erosion.  A similar approach will be used on the walked route where it crosses the more complex northern edge of the main ramparts.

We hope to start work on in June/July 2019 if we can raise enough funds.

Further updates will be posted here and on the AONB Facebook page.

Would you like to get involved? We are planning to ask local people to give up their time to help with the repair work.  This will be fully supervised by qualified project workers. If you’d like to register your interest to help FIX the FORT, please contact us with your name and contact details by email to shropshirehillsaonb@shropshire.gov.uk or by calling 01473 254744

We’d also be delighted if you’d like to raise money on our behalf by getting sponsored. Details to follow.

  • to donate online – click here (DONATE) – this will open the Donations Manager web page
  • You can donate by mobile phone: Text FORT18 £5 to donate £5 to the appeal. You can donate any amount between £1 and £10 by changing the amount in your text. For example, to donate £10, change FORT18 £5 to  FORT18 £10.  Text donations allow you to donate up to £30 in total per day. This system will be available until the end of March 2019

Countless feet, loss of vegetation and natural erosion has created deep trenches in the fort’s once proud defences.
