Strategic Environmental Assessment of Shropshire Hills AONB Management Plan 2019-24

Announcement of requirement for Strategic Environmental Assessment

The review of the statutory Shropshire Hills AONB Management Plan is under way, to lead to a new Plan covering the period 2019-24. Under the European Strategic Environmental Assessment Directive (2001/42EC), the new draft Plan is required to be subject to Strategic Environmental Assessment. This is to check that proposals in the Management Plan will not cause conflict with any environmental objectives. Since the interactions between the natural beauty of the Shropshire Hills and economic and social influences are so important, the intention is to undertake a broader ‘Sustainability Appraisal’ process.

The possible effects of Management Plan proposals on a range of environmental, social and economic objectives will be assessed, and recommendations made to reduce any potential conflicts identified. The methodology used will be based on that carried out for the 2014-19 Management Plan, and complies with Natural England’s guidance for AONBs. The Sustainability Appraisal will be developed in parallel with the revision of the AONB Management Plan.
